Thomas Fearn (1789-1863) was a prominent figure in early Huntsville, Madison County. As a physician, he is generally credited with discovering the healing properties of quinine for preventing and treating malaria. Fearn and his brothers were also important in developing the infrastructure of Huntsville, creating the Indian Creek Canal connecting Huntsville’s Big Spring to the Tennessee River and rebuilding the city’s water systems.
