James Titus, Senate Nomination for Alabama Territory

James Titus (1775-1843) was an elected senator in both the Mississippi and Alabama territorial legislatures and was instrumental in preparing these territories for statehood, in 1817 and 1819, respectively. For a time, he was the lone member of the Alabama Senate and assumed all of its duties. Pictured here is an 1819 presidential document appointing Titus to serve on the senate for the newly-formed Alabama Territory.
