Benjamin Stoddert

Benjamin Stoddert (1751-1813) was the first U.S. Secretary of the Navy. Fort Stoddert, located near what is now Mount Vernon, Mobile County, was named in his honor. The fort was constructed in 1799 after the United States government established the Mississippi Territory and served as military installation until 1814 and a post office and center of commerce until around 1830.
