William Augustus Bowles

William Augustus Bowles was a White native of Maryland who was a British Loyalist during the American Revolution and who cultivated relationships with the Creeks, Cherokees, and Seminoles in British West Florida. Beginning in 1789, he led an unsuccessful attempt to establish an independent Creek Nation and install himself as its leader. He is shown here in Creek regalia in this 1791 engraving after a portrait by British painter Thomas Hardy.
