Mobile County
Mobile County offers visitors sites that date back to the earliest human settlement in what is now Alabama. The county is steeped in history, having been occupied by the French, Spanish and British, prior to being annexed by the United States in 1813. The city of Mobile, the first European settlement within the state of Alabama and one of the oldest cities in the United States, was established in 1702. Both the city and the county derive their name from this settlement, which was known as Fort Louis de la Mobile.
