USS Merrimac

The U.S. Navy collier USS Merrimac is shown here moored at the Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia, in April 1898. Hale County native Richmond Pearson Hobson sank the vessel during the Spanish-American War in an unsuccessful attempt to blockade Santiago Harbor in Cuba.
