Theophilus Yelverton “T. Y.” Rogers

Theophilus Yelverton “T. Y.” Rogers (1935-1971) was born in Sumter County and earned a bachelor's degree at Alabama State College in Montgomery in 1955. In 1956, he became an asssistant to Martin Luther King Jr. at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and was ordained as a minister there. In 1964, he became pastor at Tuscaloosa's First African Baptist Church and spearheaded civil rights efforts in the city that spring and summer. He died at the age of 36 in an automobile accident in Atlanta.
