John Hulett

Lowndes County native John Hulett (1927-2006) was a civil rights activist who was a founder and served as first chair of the Lowndes County Freedom Organization. He is shown here on Election Day in November 1966 in Lowndes County holding a balloon promoting the organization's candidates. Hulett would go on to become the first Black sheriff in the county following his 1970 election as a candidate for the National Democratic Party of Alabama. After 22 years as a sheriff, he then served three terms as probate judge of Lowndes County.
