Sarah Ann Haynsworth Gayle (1804-1835) was the first wife of Gov. John Gayle (1831-1835) and the mother of Amelia Gayle Gorgas, wife of Confederate general Josiah Gorgas. Her journal, which she kept for many years, is a unique record of social and political life in the early years of Alabama's statehood.
