Thomas Simpson Woodward

Thomas Simpson Woodward (1797-1859) served in the War of 1812 and the Second Seminole War before settling in and naming the area Tuskegee. In 1859, he compiled and published a collection of his letters in Woodward’s Reminiscences of the Creek, or Muscogee Indians. This portrait of Woodward, copied by Margaret Whetstone from an original painting by Henry Byrd, is in the collection of the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
