Jefferson County native Robert Bell (1926-1999) was nationally recognized for his reference works on classical mythology and had a long and distinguished career as a librarian. His novel, The Butterfly Tree, is set in fictional Moss Bayou, a town based on Fairhope, Baldwin County.
