Anne Royall

A native of Maryland, Anne Newport Royall (1769-1854) was a pioneering travel writer who is most noted for her nine-volume work on her travels in the United States. Her Letters from Alabama on Various Subjects (1830) collects letters she wrote to friend Matthew Dunbar about her travels in what was then the Alabama Territory.
