Largest and Smallest Crayfish Species in Alabama

Pictured here are Alabama’s smallest crayfish species, the least crayfish (Cambarellus diminutus) and largest crayfish, the Tennessee bottlebrush crayfish (Barbicambarus simmonsi). The least crayfish is known only from Mobile County in Alabama and a few counties in southeast Mississippi. It is restricted to slow flowing water in swamps and ditches over mud, sand, and organic matter. The Tennessee bottlebrush crayfish is known only from tributaries of the Tennessee River in Lauderdale County, Alabama, and Lawrence County, Tennessee. It lives under large slab rocks in deep, swift flowing water.
