Massachusetts native Winthrop Sargent (1753-1820) was appointed by Pres. John Adams on May 7, 1798, to serve as the first governor of the Mississippi Territory, which included the present-day states of Mississippi and Alabama. This mezzotint portrait of Sargent was created in 1802 by French engraver Charles B. J. Févret de Saint-Mémin.
