Treaty Signatures

This detail shows the signatures on the First Treaty of Washington. Originally known as the Treaty with the Creeks, the document was finalized on November 14, 1805, in Washington, D.C., by U.S. and a small faction of Creek leaders. Notable in the list is Indian Agent Benjamin Hawkins and Creek chief William McIntosh. The document was the first large land cession by the Creeks and would open up their former lands for building the Federal Road.
