Sugarcane syrup was a staple in Alabama's food traditions throughout much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although the demand for locally-made syrup has declined in recent decades, many local festivals feature syrup making. At the Dothan Folk Festival at Landmark Park, sugarcane is processed with a mule-powered mill.
