Searcy Hospital

Searcy Hospital was a state-run hospital located on the grounds of the Mount Vernon Arsenal in Washington County. Founded as the Mount Vernon Insane Hospital in 1902 to serve mentally ill African Americans, the name was changed to Searcy Hospital in 1919 for its first superintendent, J. T. Searcy. In 1970, patients at the hospital were part of the Wyatt v. Stickney lawsuit against the Alabama Department of Mental Health for negligence, improper treatment, and other human rights violations.
