Noted physicist and inventor Robert Van de Graaff stands underneath a model of his famous Van de Graaff Electrostatic Generator. Van de Graaff was a member of a well-connected Tuscaloosa family that included state senator Robert Jemison Jr. and John Asa Rountree Jr., director of aeronautics for the Alabama Department of Transportation and son of Good Roads Movement leader Asa Rountree. Van de Graaff's boyhood home, the Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion, is now an event venue.
