President Roosevelt Aboard the USS Tuscaloosa, 1940

U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt sits with a fishing pole next to the chief petty officers of the heavy cruiser USS Tuscaloosa (CA-37) in 1940. The ship was named for Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, and participated in several significant battles of World War II, including the June 6, 1944, landings in Normandy, France, and the 1945 invasions of the Japanese-held islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
