Maxwell Field (now Maxwell Air Force Base) was named for Lt. William C. Maxwell, seen here with a De Havilland 4 (DH-4) aircraft. Maxwell was born in Natchez, Monroe County, and raised in Atmore, Escambia County. When the United States entered World War I, he enlisted in the U.S. Army while a student at the University of Alabama. He was killed in an aviation accident in Manila, the Philippines, on August 12, 1920.
