John Parks Newsome

Businessman John Parks Newsome (1893-1961) represented Alabama's Ninth Congressional District for one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. A Democrat and veteran of World War I, he advocated for increased benefits for veterans and was among the members of Congress who voted in favor of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, which provided a range of services to returning servicemen who had taken part in World War II. Prior to embarking on his political career, he ran a successful wholesale business and other enterprises in Birmingham, Jefferson County.
