Kentucky lawyer John McKinley (1780-1852) was an early settler of Huntsville, Madison County , and was among a group of land speculators who founded Florence, in Lauderdale County. McKinley was the first Alabama resident to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. He was appointed by Pres. Martin Van Buren in 1838 and served until his death in 1852.
