Elmore County native Joe Sewell (1898-1990) was a star shortstop and third baseman in the major leagues for the Cleveland Indians (present-day Guardians) and New York Yankees. He was one of four members of the family who played in the major leagues, along with brothers Luke and Tommy and cousin Truett "Rip" Sewell.
