James Justus (1887-1968) was an inventor and businessman who invented a new type of submarine salvage machine, or diving bell, designed to attach to stranded submarines during his years in Birmingham, Jefferson County, in the 1930s. He is shown here standing at center with his financial backers and an engineer (kneeling at right) from Birmingham's Stewart Machine Company, which built the prototype.
