James La Fayette Cottrell (1808-1885, at left) served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1834-1837 and the Alabama Senate from 1838-1841. He also served briefly as Alabama's Third Congressional District representative to the U.S. Congress in 1846-1847. He is shown here with his brother in law, Florida state senator James W. McQueen.
