Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) was the 17th president of the United States. Ascending to the presidency following Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1864, he instituted Presidential Reconstruction in 1865. Before his presidency, Johnson was governor of Tennessee and served in the U.S. Congress.
