Execution of Heinrich Hartmann Wirz

Capt. Heinrich Hartmann Wirz, the Confederate commander of Andersonville Prison in Americus, Georgia, was executed at the Washington Penitentiary in Washington, D.C., in November 1865, for his part in the deaths of nearly 13,000 federal prisoners. He became a symbol for Lost Cause ideology for many Confederate apologists, such as army nurse Kate Cumming.
