"That Same Old Pirate Afloat Again," a cartoon by Thomas Nast published in Harper's Weekly in 1874, depicts a Confederate soldier standing on a Union flag as he raises a pirate flag stating "This Is A White Man's Government" and "KK CSA slavery," referring to the South's commitment to white supremacy and its use of the Ku Klux Klan to terrorize newly emancipated African Americans. A federal ship fires a mortar into the planks of the Democratic Party platform under his feet.
