Eli Sims Shorter (1823-1879) was a lawyer and politician who served Alabama in the U.S. Congress from 1855 to 1859. He spent much of his adult life in Eufaula, Barbour County, as was among the prominent citizens who comprised the so-called Eufaula Regency. This group included Eli's brother John Gill Shorter, who served as Alabama's 17th governor.
