This plant is part of the Cheney Lime Company complex in Allgood, Blount County. The plant shown in the picture consists of eight kilns and was capable of producing 1,000 barrels of lime per day. Lime was an important component of steel-making because its addition to the manufacturing process helped remove impurities from the finished steel.
