Charles Wardell Stiles

Zoologist Charles Wardell Stiles of the Public Health and Marine Hospital Service first identified Necator americanus, the American species of hookworm, in 1902. In the following months, he traveled through the South to study its prevalence and found them in abundance, particularly within farms and mill villages.
