Orbiter Challenger's STS-7 mission in the spring of 1983 was NASA's first to include an American woman in the flight crew, Sally Ride. Her historic flight was later followed by four women with Alabama ties, Jan Davis, Mae Jemison, Kay Hire, and Kathryn Thornton.
