On February 20, 1901, the Bryce Hospital Coal Mine located along the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, flooded, leaving 13 miners trapped in the mine. Three of the trapped miners, Pompey Stokes, Dock Foster, and Jeff Hamner, drowned on the first day of the disaster, and ten others were rescued two-and-a-half days later. Eight of the ten survivors are photographed here alongside four men involved in the rescue.
