Benjamin Hawkins

Benjamin Hawkins (1754-1816) was a federal agent to the southeastern Indians from 1796 until his death in 1816. Although sympathetic to Native American cultural traditions, he worked to implement the "plan of civilization," a federal initiative to encourage Indians to adopt European American agricultural, legal, and social practices.
