Alfred E. Smith (1873-1944) was a four-term governor of New York who ran unsuccessfully against Republican candidate Herbert Hoover in the 1928 presidential election. Smith's Catholicism and anti-Prohibition stance cost him much support among southern Democrats. In Alabama, many Democrats voted for Hoover.
