Albert James Pickett (1810-1858) is widely acknowledged as Alabama's first historian. His two-volume History of Alabama, And Incidentally of Georgia and Mississippi, From the Earliest Period was published in 1851 and continues to serve as a valued resource on the state's people, culture, and history.
