1862 Drawing of Florence

This series of sketches of Florence were created by artist Adolph Metzner on July 22, 1862. Metzner was an officer with the 32nd Indiana Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and documented the conflict with drawings such as these. The top section shows the view of Florence across the Tennessee River, the center highlights Wesleyan Hall on the campus of what is now the University of North Alabama, and the bottom shows the foundation of what would become the Memphis & Charleston Railroad Bridge connecting the city with Tuscumbia, Colbert County.
