St. Florian

St. Florian is located in Lauderdale County in the northwestern part of the state. It has a mayor/council form of government.

History

The land that is now the town of St. Florian was originally part of the plantation of brothers John and Matthew Wilson. In the 1870s, the property was divided into smaller tracts, and the tracts that made up the town were purchased by German immigrants who named it after the patron saint of firefighters and parts of what are now Austria. The first post office opened in 1879. The town incorporated in 1970. It is associated with the nearby city of Florence.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, St. Florian recorded a population of 506. Of that number, 94.7 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 4.3 percent as African American, 0.8 percent as Hispanic, and 0.4 percent as Asian. The town’s median household income was $38,571, and the per capita income was $40,108.

  • Wholesale trade (2.1 percent)
  • Construction (1.3 percent)
  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and extraction (0.8 percent)

Education

There are no schools in St. Florian. Students attend Lauderdale County schools. The University of North Alabama is located nearby in Florence.

Transportation

The Old Jackson Highway, County Road 47, runs northeast-southwest through the town, and County Road 61 runs north-south.

Events and Places of Interest

St. Florian is close to the many recreational and historical sites of the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area. Shoal Creek Preserve offers nature trails and is operated by the Forever Wild Land Trust.
