Hytop is located in west-central Jackson County. It has a mayor/city council form of government.

History

Hytop Town Hall

Hytop is located on the Cumberland Plateau about five miles from the state line. The first post office was established there in 1894, with William Mashburn Sr. serving as its first postmaster. It was incorporated in 1991.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Hytop recorded a population of 507. Of that number, 95.7 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 2.8 percent as two or more races, 2.1 percent as Asian, and 1.6 percent as American Indian. The town's median household income was $56,786, and the per capita income was $32,038.

Education

Students in Hytop attend Jackson County schools; no public schools are located within the town limits.

Transportation

Walls of Jericho State Highway 79 bisects Hytop running north-south. County Highway 245 exits town running south.

Events and Places of Interest

The Walls of Jericho, a popular natural area, is located about two miles north of Hytop, which bills itself as "The Gateway to the Walls of Jericho." The area was recently designated a national recreation trail. Hytop is located about 6 miles northeast of the James D. Martin-Skyline Wildlife Management Area Firing Range operated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
