Alabama suffered economically during World War I and saw workers leave for war-time jobs to the North and West, spawning the larger population shift known as the Great Migration. Training bases operated near Montgomery and Anniston, and approximately 12,000 national guardsman and volunteers, along with 74,000 draftees, were sent to the battlefields of Europe.
