William B. Travis House

The William B. Travis House is a two-story historic cottage the town of Claiborne, Monroe County. The town was once a bustling center of commerce but is now largely abandoned. The cottage was built around 1820 by and is best known as the home of William B. Travis, who lived there while studying law under future Alabama congressman James Dellet. While in Claiborne, Travis founded and published the Claiborne Herald newspaper. In 1831, facing mounting debts, Travis moved to Texas; there, he joined the Texas militia and died at the infamous Battle of the Alamo.
