The University of West Alabama was founded as Livingston Female Academy in 1835. Located in Livingston, Sumter County, the institution has grown into a traditional, four-year college offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Famed education and prison reformer Julia S. Tutwiler was a co-principal of the school from 1880-1890 and served as its president from 1890-1910.
