Umbria plantation near Sawyerville, Hale County, was built in the late 1920s and destroyed by fire in 1973. Its raised basement and long, deep front gallery recalled the plantation houses of owner Samuel Pickens's native South Carolina. The house was catalogued by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1934, when this photo was taken.
