U. W. Clemon

U. W. Clemon (1943-) became the first African American federal judge in Alabama in 1980 when he was appointed by Pres. Jimmy Carter to the Northern District of Alabama. A native of Birmingham, he practiced civil rights law and served in the state Senate before taking the federal bench.
