Tuskegee National Forest is the smallest national forest in the United States, covering about 11,000 acres in northeastern Macon County. The federal government bought the land, which had been depleted by farming, in the 1930s with the aim of developing it for forestry and recreation. Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed the area a national forest in 1959.
