In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ flight in 1903, Atlanta-based pilot John Reynolds spent four years building a replica Wright Flyer. He completed it in 1994 and in 2003, he and his wife, Carol, donated the replica to the Southern Museum of Flight in 2004. It is now on display in the Early Aviation Hangar. The "Birmingham" sign is the stern plate and the only remaining piece of the original USS Birmingham Chester-class scout cruiser, launched in 1907 and scrapped in 1930.
