In 1935, John Augustus Walker was awarded a contract from the federal Works Progress Administration to paint a series of murals for the walls of Mobile's Old City Hall. The subjects were to be broad interpretations of aspects of the city's history, including industry and commerce, agriculture, and, as illustrated in this sketch, transportation. The figure is that of the Roman god Mercury, a patron of travelers.
