Alabama physician Seale Harris (1870-1957) was at the forefront of diabetes research in the 1920s and opened the Seale Harris Clinic in Birmingham. He was the owner and editor in-chief of the Gulf States Journal of Medicine (now the Southern Medical Journal) for a time and was chair of medicine at the Medical College of Alabama (now the University of Alabama School of Medicine).
