Sand covers graves in Springhill Cemetery near Akron, Hale County. The look is intended to mimic the appearance of traditional nineteenth-century scraped graves while also allowing for modern maintenance practices. The flowers are part of the annual Decoration Day celebrations held in many such graveyards.
