In 1990, the federal government renamed the courthouse in Birmingham, Jefferson County, the Robert S. Vance Federal Building and United States Courthouse in honor of the slain federal judge. Vance was assassinated on December 16, 1989, via mail bomb at his home in Mountain Brook.
